The World’s Largest Known Jazz Programming Radio Station, WPFW 89.3 FM, Announces Fundraising Event Honoring Omrao Brown of Bohemian Caverns

The arts and entertainment community will share the stage at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club for a commemorative night of WPFW 89.3 FM fundraising, and special guest performances honoring Omrao Brown for a decade of service at the historic Bohemian Caverns.

Washington, D.C. (Friday, June 24, 2016) – In lieu of the recent closing of Bohemian Caverns, the need to recognize a living legend is now in full effect. DSE Live proudly joins WPFW 89.3 FM on July 11th to honor Omrao Brown for the decade of jazz music cultivation at the historic location on U. Street.

“The rich historical legacy of the Bohemian Caverns is celebrated at this event where WPFW honors Omrao Brown while garnering support for the jazz community here in the DC metropolitan area,” said Jerry Paris, General Manager of WPFW 89.3 FM.

“Bohemian Caverns… it wasn’t just a club…it was an historic D.C. cultural institution,” said Olayimika Cole, Chair of WPFW 89.3 FM Local Station Board. “The WPFW Honors fundraising event is a special opportunity for the music community to support the Nation’s Capital only Jazz and Justice station, and honor the notable work of Omrao Brown. The loss of the Caverns to the DC Music Community was a profound one. It was truly a music club on different and higher levels, contained in one historic building.  When we lost Bohemian Caverns we also lost a piece of American culture which was experienced by a global audience. “

Join us in the WPFW fundraiser to continue the celebration of jazz music and the artists who embrace the craft. WPFW is the only radio station in the district that focuses on both “jazz and justice,” bringing the necessary awareness and comfort to the listeners in the nation’s capital. After sharing her own sentiments regarding the closing of Bohemian Caverns, Desiree Samira lent her strategic support in the event planning and production of the event.

“It truly is a privilege to join WPFW 89.3M in this occasion,” said Desiree. “Both the radio station and Bohemian Caverns have shaped my career and the work done with Omrao Brown has given me a chance to show and prove myself in the District. There is no better way to support a trendsetting curator and tastemaker like Brown.”

Omrao Brown managed Bohemian Caverns from 2006-2016, bringing in a host of jazz musicians including local artists, college students, and even he even established an Artist-In-Residency program. Bohemian Caverns closed in March 2016 due to a decision made by the property owner and now it is necessary to give tribute to the one who preserved and delivered DC culture to a national and international audience.

The event will be held at Bethesda Blues & Jazz Supper Club with a VIP Reception held at 7PM, and the WPFW Honors Concert to begin at 8PM. This special occasion will be hosted by Quincy Phillips and feature a celebratory reunion of jazz musicians, performance artists, vocalists and deejays who graced the stage of Bohemian Caverns and performed for WPFW programming. Attendees will enjoy performances by Marcus Anderson, Ben Williams, Christie Dashiell, Chelsey Green, Nasar Abadey, Akua Allrich, Dwayne Adell, Wes Felton, Herman Burney, Fred Foss, Federico Peña, Davey Yarborough, Kimberly Washington and DJ YZO, Heidi Martin, Tarus Mateen, Dehejia Maat, Kiyem Ade with more stellar artists to be announced.
